Sywell aviation museum visit 18-4-2010.

'H' and myself called into Sywell to see the aviation museum there, seeing as we were out and about in that area. When we got to Sywell, it was quiet, with not much going on, but there was people watching from the public carpark, and an 'ice-cream' van on standby !!. Work was going on, extending the museum building at both ends. We spoke to one member of the museum, who was most helpful, and told us all about, a 'find' of which the museum will display soon, once the extensions are complete, in the form of a nuclear 'test' sphere, made from concrete, which was 'offered' to the museum, by someone who came across it whilst 'clearing' a factory area out. The museum is 'free' to enter, but all donations are welcome, and I do suggest, if you call-in to see it, to 'donate' anything you can, to keep this fine museum going for future generations to learn some history of Northamptonshire's past. They have some fine crash exibits for you to see whilst there, B-17 and P-38 remains are on show, along with Wellington remains also. Lots of wartime items, including 'bombs' and stacks of b&w shots to be seen. I enjoyed the visit to this museum which is set in a 'nissen' type hut building. A warm welcome is made to you, and nobody 'barking' at you, staff are most pleasant, and are there to ask any of your questions. The memorial to the late Paul Morgan is very impressive to see, which is in the airfield side of the hotel at the entrance in the garden area, opposite the museum.

Another interesting little museum, if you've not done it, is Fenland & West Norfolk Aviation Museum, Bamber Garden & Leisure Centre Lynn Road, Walton Highway, Wisbech, PE14 7DA. Did it a few years ago when we were staying with friends in Ely. Added advantage was the garden centre so there was 'something for the ladies' too.

Will do that one day, they have the cockpit remains of one of the 'yellow and blck' Mig 29s that a a 'bump' at Fairford at a R.I.A.T. some years ago. Called in once on the way o the holiday cottege at wells-next-to-sea, but was 'closed' but did spot a T5 Lightning ?
